Summary of Grand Junction Imagination Library’s

2015 Parent Survey to Evaluate Impact of Program on Registered Children

In November of 2015, approximately 7 years after Grand Junction Imagination Library started registering children to receive free books through the program, the organization conducted its fourth annual parent survey to collect feedback on the impact of the program.

The survey provided the following feedback:

  • 97% of surveyed parents believe Imagination Library is helping to prepare their child for school.
  • 66% of surveyed parents indicated that they are reading together more with their child since they enrolled in Imagination Library

Being read to as a child and having books in the home are the two most important indicators of future academic success (National Center for Family Literacy).  Enrollment in Imagination Library ensures families have books in the home AND families tell us they are spending more time reading with their children.

  • 100% of surveyed parents said their child’s literacy is being positively impacted by receiving books through Imagination Library.
  • 82% of surveyed parents said their child finds the Imagination Library books very interesting.
  • 62% of surveyed parents said the reading tips included in the Imagination Library books are helpful.

But perhaps the most impactful responses are those additional comments that parents submitted, some of which are included below.

“My son loves getting a special book in the mail each month.  They are good books that are relevant for my child.  Imagination Library is one of a kind and is truly putting books into children’s hands that may not have anywhere else to get them.  Thank you!”

“Without Imagination Library our son wouldn’t have his own books to play with and read.”

“We don’t have money to always buy new books so it’s amazing that we receive one each month.”

“Although we go to the library regularly and get a few books from thrift stores, having a collection of books that are his – that never have to be returned -  is such a privilege and a joy for my child and for us parents too!”

“Imagination Library is a great program that has helped my kids get an extra jump on building a love of learning.”

“We love the variety of topics.  The subject always seem to coincide with what is going on with our child at that point in her life (age specific) and it’s wonderful to have a book that we can use to help her understand and get through it.  This is the best program I’ve enrolled in and we are very appreciative.”

“I have to admit, I was initially skeptical of the program and wondered how good free books would be.  I’ve been blown away!  It is obvious that a lot of thought goes into the book selections and we have enjoyed, and are still enjoying, each and every one.”

“When the books come in the mail, my oldest loves to read it to my youngest.  One book helps two kids and I love it.”

“Every night is a book night and my son always picks one from Imagination Library.”

“Imagination Library is what started my son’s love for books and reading.  We started getting books when he was 5 months old and have been reading every night since our first book arrived.  It is something we both enjoy!  I feel like it sparked a love of words with my son.  I am extremely grateful for this program and dread the day my son turns 5 and we don’t get books anymore.  We have kept each and every book we have received and love them all.  Thank you for this program.”

“My child is developing a love of reading and a vibrant imagination.  She looks forward to our nightly book time, as do I!  Book choice is essential and we have yet to receive a title that disappoints.  Thank you for a wonderful program.”

“This is a wonderful program.  We are so grateful for it.  Imagination Library enriches our lives every day!”

About the Survey

Grand Junction Imagination Library collected feedback from parents with children enrolled in the program through an online survey.  In total, we contacted 1,315 enrolled families; 277 of those enrolled families participated in the survey (21% participation).  An enrolled family is a family with one or more children registered to receive books through GJIL.
